SKipper: Kovu's Bookkeeping Program

Author: Kovu | Date: Feb 05 2010

SKipper is a bookkeeping programm that makes the difference. Its design bases on my father's old dBase bookkeeping software, which finally has to be replaced, after 20 years of service, and has its strength in the fact that its database tables are completely open and editable. To be more precise, what's really special about it: the method how Skipper writes and processes DB entries is derived from the hand-written booklets people used for their bookkeeping tasks before personal computers became available to the public. Yet it comes with the great advantage of computing: that errors can always be corrected.

While SKipper is (and mostlikely will always be) a 'work in progress', I offer a first release for download here. In order to keep public program cores separated from private ones, SKipper comes with the SKript feature (some sort of plugin functionality I introduced with the release of KX-Base). SKipper relies on my KX-Files database solution for portability reasons and stores its data in *.xf3 or *.dbf files. Another portability solution in SKipper is the use of Olivier Plathey's FPDF for printing purposes.

When creating a new finance log, SKipper will generate 2 files, one to store account informations and log entries, and another one to store Kaefer Codes, which allow you to keep track of total amounts and balances based on categories defined by those codes. If there's already existing finance logs, SKipper offers to import account informations and Kaefer Codes from those files. If not, there's a wizard which you can use to set up a correct finance log structure.

SKipper is multilingual. The current version comes with 2 preinstalled languages: German and English.
